Yoga and Writing: Word Power

Can I ask you a question?

If you had a chance to offer a singular message to the world, what would it be?

This is mine:

I love and celebrate everything that you are. I believe in the ability for you, me, and all of us to wake up to the truth that we are all One. I believe that we are capable of living a life centered around love, forgiveness, and joy, regardless of life’s events and circumstances.

Dammit, The Beatles were right, love IS all you need.

May we all learn to live our lives centered around this truth.

So, that’s the long and short of my message for the world. It’s my mission to repeat this message in all that I do and is likely not the first nor the last time that you’ll hear it.

What’s YOUR message?

Also, if you could send a message to the world, how would you convey it?

You know, I didn’t always understand the responsibility to convey my message. I used to think that my job started and stopped with being a good yoga and meditation teacher. I thought that if I became more technically proficient, if I had more training and teaching experience, if I could teach the perfect yoga class or Yoga Nidra experience, that I would make a bigger and more positive impact on the world.

It’s not true.

Instead, what life, experience, and teaching has taught me is that yes, technical proficiency is important but doesn’t necessarily make the depth of impact I want to make. Connecting with my students in the way I wanted to required something much, much more intimate and direct than merely teaching a good class. It required something simple in concept yet difficult in practice, something that makes me feel both terrifyingly vulnerable but can lead to immense satisfaction.

What I’ve learned as the best way to connect with people and make a positive impact on this world is this. We must:

  1. Discover who we are

  2. Learn how to love who we are

  3. Serve the world with who we are

I also learned that one of the best ways to serve the world through who I am is through writing.

Writing allowed me to reach my students beyond what I could do in class.

Writing allowed me to process and share some of the principles of the practice we just didn’t have time for in a yoga class. It also allowed me to stay connected to my students, even when I moved away from the studio, even when I moved outta the country.

My goal is to serve the world through yoga and meditation and writing became an essential cornerstone of that goal, an essential cornerstone of my business.

I started a blog more than 15 years ago, even before I had a website, and having this writing practice gave me an unexpected way to add depth and richness to what I was offering in class. My students read my messages even if they couldn’t make it to class. Plus, because I love to tell stories and share poetry, writing was the perfect medium for sharing that part of myself with my students.

Now I’m not necessarily suggesting that you have to start a blog for your business (though it’s not a bad idea), but I am suggesting that writing in any form can be very powerful to communicate who you are, illuminate what sets you apart from others in your field, and demonstrates the value of what you offer to your students and clients.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WRITING?

  • It helps you deliver your essential message to the world

  • It helps your ideal students and clients to find you

  • It both shares and distinguishes what sets you apart from others in your field

  • It engages your your students or clients in an effective and very accessible way

  • It gives you a simple and direct way to invite them to stretch into the person they are meant to be with a call to action

There are a billion ways you can use writing to help you do what you do. You can share writing through newsletters, blogs, articles, social media, and even copy for videos. You can write a book.

Connecting with my students through writing has been a complete game-changer for my business. It’s helped me be non-location dependent, it’s helped me to relate to my students in a way that is accessible to everyone, and most of all, it allows me to share more of myself.

I want to take a moment and point out something uber obvious: you’re reading this.

The same way that you’re reading this message I want to help you put your message out into the world so that people can see it, hear it, and feel it. I want to help you make the kind of positive impact you’re meant to make on this planet.

To do this, I want to invite you to explore the immense power of words. Your words.

Do you cringe at the thought of writing? I know, I know, a lot of people do. Writing can be hard!
